writer and director McCarter Theatre, Artistic Director
Carroll can write any kind of music for the theatre, in any
genre, any style, any instrumentation and its power is breath-taking.
For me, as a writer and director, he has written nineteenth
century Swedish peasant dances and a string quartet for MISS
JULIE, a full jazz score for my play GREENSBORO:A REQUIEM,
a score spanning 150 years of African-American music for HAVING
OUR SAY, and a full-fledged rhythm and blues opera for BETSEY
BROWN by Ntozake Shange, Emily Mann, and Baikida Carroll.
He is, very simply, the most inventive and emotionally powerful
composer for the stage I have ever encountered".
